Boater Education Classes to be held in Springfield Township
It is important to know the law before operating a boat on Ohio waterways.
An Ohio law passed in January of 2000 requires that boaters born on or after January 1, 1982, successfully complete either a Boater Education course or a proficiency exam online to operate boats with 10HP or more. This law applies to operators AND supervising adults. Currently, the law seems to affect only young adults, but as time passes, it will affect everyone who operates a boat with more than 10HP. The Boater Education Course consist of a variety of audio-visual teaching aids and is geared to average learning ability. Upon completion of the course an education certificate will be issued by mail. It is not a license, but it shows proof that the bearer passed the Boater Education course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and is accepted in every surrounding state. (Having a driver’s license to operate a car has nothing to do with operating a boat, according to the law.)
In preparation of the upcoming boating season, the NASBLA-approved Boater Education course will be offered at the Boyd Esler Senior/Community Center at 2491 Canfield Road in Springfield Township in March. Classes are open to the public. Participants must attend all evenings and pass a test to receive their certification card. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a paid adult to attend. The cost of the course is five dollars. This pays for all handouts from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. “We are pleased to provide a place where people can learn about boater safety at a minimal cost,” said Bruce Killian, Springfield Township Trustee. “Because we have so many recreational waterways nearby including our own Springfield Lake and the Portage Lakes, we thank the Watercraft Division of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for providing this course,” he added. Pre-registration is required by March 4th by calling Cindy @ 330-794-1739 x4116. The five dollars will be collected the first evening at the beginning of the course. Classes are March 8, 15, 22 and 29th from 6:30 - 9:00 pm.
